What is EI?

EI is Canada's federal unemployment insurance program. Employees pay 1.64% of insurable earnings up to $65,700 (1.31% in Quebec, which runs its own parental program). Employers pay 1.4× the employee rate. Benefits: 55% of average insurable earnings for 14-45 weeks.
