401(k)
US employer-sponsored retirement plan
A 401(k) is a tax-advantaged retirement account offered by employers. You contribute pre-tax (Traditional) or post-tax (Roth) dollars up to $23,000/year (2026). Most employers match some portion — always contribute at least up to the match. Withdrawals before 59½ incur a 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax.
