How to Check Your CIBIL Score Free in India (Without Getting Spammed)

You can check your CIBIL score for free once a year directly from CIBIL — no third-party app, no SMS harvesting, no sales calls. Here is the exact link, and what the legit free alternatives actually give you.

If anyone asks you to pay to check your CIBIL score, they are lying. RBI mandated free annual credit reports from all 4 bureaus (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF) for every Indian citizen. Here is how to actually use that right.

The official free score (100% legit)

Go to cibil.comGet Your Free CIBIL Score → sign up with PAN + DOB + mobile OTP.

What you get: - Your official CIBIL score (updated monthly at the bureau, but the report is locked for 12 months after you pull it) - Full credit report — every account, payment history, utilization, inquiries, public records - No ads on the interface, but they will pitch you their paid CIBIL Plus subscription once - No SMS or call spam (they do send email updates on score changes)

What you don't get: - Unlimited re-pulls. After 1 free report, the next free one is 12 months later. Each additional pull is ₹550 for a month subscription, ₹800/year.

My take: this is the one you want for the authoritative annual check. Use it in April or January every year, save the PDF.

Free from apps (same score, different trade-off)

These apps pull your score using their commercial CIBIL licence and subsidize the cost through loan marketing:

| App | Update frequency | What they do with your data | |---|---|---| | CRED | Monthly | Shows you personalized credit card offers; does not sell PAN to third parties | | Paytm | Monthly | Shows Paytm loan eligibility; cross-sells Paytm Postpaid, credit cards | | Groww | Monthly | Cross-sells demat account + personal loans | | BankBazaar | Monthly | Aggressive loan + card marketing via email + calls | | Moneycontrol | Monthly | Article recommendations + paid newsletter pitch |

All of them show the same number because all of them pull from the same CIBIL database. The score is identical.

The real choice: how much marketing do you tolerate in exchange for free monthly updates?

  • CRED — least aggressive, premium audience
  • Paytm / Groww — medium aggressive, broad audience
  • BankBazaar — most aggressive, expect phone calls within 48 hours of signup

The other 3 bureaus (also free)

CIBIL is not the only bureau. RBI recognizes 4:

| Bureau | Free report | URL | |---|---|---| | CIBIL TransUnion | 1/year | cibil.com | | Experian | 1/year | experian.in | | Equifax | 1/year | equifax.co.in | | CRIF High Mark | 1/year | crifhighmark.com |

Each bureau has slightly different data — a lender may pull from any one. In practice, banks use CIBIL 90% of the time for retail lending decisions in India. Check Experian or CRIF only if you've been rejected and suspect bureau-specific data errors.

How to pull safely (avoid spam)

1. Use a separate email address you reserve for financial services. Don't use your primary personal email. 2. Use your actual mobile number (no fakes — KYC requires a real match). 3. Before signing up, check the URL. Phishing sites impersonating CIBIL exist. The real URL is cibil.com (not cibil.co.in, cibil-score.com, or similar). 4. Read the fine print on marketing consent. Uncheck "share my data with partners for offers" every time. 5. After your check is complete, block promotional SMS from the app's short codes.

What to do with the report

Once you have the PDF:

1. Check the account list — anything you don't recognize? File a dispute. 2. Check the payment history — any late-payment flags? That's your fix target. 3. Check utilization on each active card — any above 30%? That's your next fix. 4. Check the inquiries section — unfamiliar hard pulls? Dispute.

Save the PDF. Compare next year's PDF to track what changed.
