UAE levies no personal income tax. Your take-home equals gross.

UAE salary = take-home salary

The UAE levies no personal income tax on salary, bonuses, dividends, capital gains, or rental income. For most expat employees, the only deduction between gross and net is health insurance premiums (often employer-paid anyway). Your posted AED package is what lands in your bank every month.

Home country tax still applies

US citizens pay US federal tax on worldwide income regardless of UAE residence (FEIE exempts ~$130k for 2026). UK, Australia, Canada, and most other nationals: tax-free if tax-resident in UAE and not crossing home-country day-count thresholds. Always verify with a cross-border accountant.

Basic vs allowances — why the split matters

Basic salary drives gratuity (21/30 days per year), overtime (basic hourly × 1.25-1.5), annual leave salary, and sick leave. Housing and transport allowances increase take-home but don't count for these. Negotiate a healthy basic (50-60% of total) unless you expect quick exit.

Social contributions

Only UAE Nationals contribute to GPSSA pension (5% employee, 12.5% employer, 2.5% government = 20%). Expats have no social security deduction. End-of-service gratuity accrues on the employer's books but is not taken from your monthly pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know, in one place.

Is UAE salary really tax-free?

Yes — no personal income tax on salary, bonuses, dividends, capital gains, or rental income. Expats may still owe tax in home country under tax residency rules (US citizens: yes; most others: only if tax-resident in home country).

What deductions will I see?

Very few: no income tax, no social security for most expats. UAE Nationals contribute 5% to GPSSA pension (employer 12.5%). Some companies deduct health insurance premiums. End-of-service gratuity accrues but is not deducted from salary.

Basic vs total salary — what matters?

Total package is what you negotiate and live on. But basic salary drives: gratuity calculation, housing allowance eligibility, overtime rates, annual leave salary, and sick leave. A higher basic reduces take-home flex but increases gratuity.

What is the WPS?

Wage Protection System — MOHRE requires all private-sector salaries to be paid through UAE banks. Employers who delay or default face suspension of work permits. Ensures your salary shows up on time.

How does my home country tax my UAE salary?

Depends on tax residency. US citizens: worldwide income is taxable with Foreign Earned Income Exclusion ($126,500 in 2026) reducing the hit. UK: only non-residents for 16+ days in UK (or <46 with SRT ties) escape UK tax. India: NRI status requires <182 days in India; UAE salary is then fully tax-free in India, though Indian-source income remains taxable. Canada/Australia: sever residency ties to avoid worldwide taxation. Document your UAE residency visa, Emirates ID, and flight records to support non-residency claims.

What should I negotiate beyond base salary?

Key components: (1) housing allowance (20%-30% of package, typically AED 60k-150k/year for mid-level), (2) transportation allowance (AED 6k-18k/year), (3) annual flight tickets to home country (economy or business class for self + family), (4) medical insurance (should be fully covered — by law), (5) schooling allowance for dependents (AED 40k-60k/child), (6) annual leave (30 calendar days minimum), (7) signing bonus or relocation allowance (AED 10k-50k one-off).
